چکیده

The indistinguishability of identical particles has profound effects at low temperatures and/or high density where quantum mechanical wave packets overlap appreciably. The occupation representation is used to study the statistical mechanics and thermodynamics of ideal quantum gases satisfying FermiDirac or Bose-Einstein statistics. This notebook concentrates on formal and conceptual developments, liberally quoting more technical results obtained in the auxiliary notebooks occupy.nb, which presents numerical methods for relating the chemical potential to density, and fermi.nb and bose.nb, which study the mathematical properties of special functions defined for Ferm-Dirac and Bose-Einstein systems. The auxiliary notebooks also contain a large number of exercises.

Relativistic Quantum Thermodynamics of Ideal Gases in 2 Dimensions

In this work we study the behavior of relativistic ideal Bose and Fermi gases in two space dimensions. Making use of polylogarithm functions we derive a closed and unified expression for their densities. It is shown that both type of gases are essentially inequivalent, and only in the non-relativistic limit the spinless and equal mass Bose and Fermi gases are equivalent as known in the literature.

A Scaling Approach to Ideal Quantum Gases

In this article we present a derivation of the thermal equations of state of ideal quantum gases by using solely dimensional analysis, thermodynamic considerations and simple physical arguments. The thermodynamic relations of gases depend strongly on the energymomentum relation of the gas particles and on their spin, i.e., whether the particles are fermions or bosons. The energy-momentum relati...

Ideal Quantum Gases in D-dimensional Space and Power-Law Potentials

We investigate ideal quantum gases in D-dimensional space and confined in a generic external potential by using the semiclassical approximation. In particular, we derive density of states, density profiles and critical temperatures for Fermions and Bosons trapped in isotropic power-law potentials. Form such results, one can easily obtain those of quantum gases in a rigid box and in a harmonic t...

In this paper, the effects of boundary and connectivity on ideal gases in two-dimensional confined space and three-dimensional tubes are discussed in detail based on the analytical result. The implication of such effects on the mesoscopic system is also revealed. PACS numbers: 05.30.-d, 68.65.-k

Eigenvalue Statistics in Quantum Ideal Gases

The eigenvalue statistics of quantum ideal gases with single particle energies en = n α are studied. A recursion relation for the partition function allows to calculate the mean density of states from the asymptotic expansion for the single particle density. For integer α > 1 one expects and finds number theoretic degeneracies and deviations from the Poissonian spacing distribution. By semiclas...
